MINNEAPOLIS -- Northwestern's seventh-seeded men's tennis team advances to Friday's second round of the 2006 Big Ten Men's Tennis Championship after defeating No. 10 seed Michigan State 4-0 Thursday at the Baseline Tennis Center.

The 'Cats started the championship on the right note by claiming the doubles point.

Northwestern's team of Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent High School) and Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico/South Florida) got the first win for the 'Cats as they allowed only two points to Michigan State's team of Mike Brown and Scott Rasmussen at No. 3 doubles.

Juniors Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) and Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrügge) then clinched the match for the Wildcats with the win at No. 2. NU's team beat the Spartans' Mike Flowers and John Allare 9-7, giving Northwestern a 1-0 lead.

NU's 42nd-ranked team of senior captain Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) and junior Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) had its match abandoned at a 6-6 tie with MSU's Nick Rinks and Adam Monich at No. 1 doubles.

Northwestern quickly claimed the match with three straight-set wins.

Dwyer was the first Wildcat to win, topping Flowers 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles for his first Big Ten Championship win.

Schaechterle extended Northwestern's lead to 3-0 as he beat Rasmussen at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 6-0.

Gomez clinched the win for the 'Cats by beating Allare at No. 3. After winning the first-set tiebreak, Gomez took the momentum with him into the second set and won 7-5, 6-3.

With the win, Northwestern advances to the championship's second round where it faces the No. 2 seed Illinois at 2 p.m. Friday, April 28 at the Baseline Tennis Center.
