EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrügge) has been named to the 2006 All-Big Ten team, the conference office announced Thursday night. The accolade is the second in as many years for Tempke, who becomes the 12th player in program history to be named all-conference in consecutive seasons.

Tempke, who saw a majority of time at the No. 1 singles spot for the 'Cats, earned the honor following a season in which he posted a 17-14 overall record. Tempke earned wins over two top-15 ranked singles players this season, and came within a point of earning a victory over Illinois' third-ranked and reigning Big Ten Athlete of the Year Ryan DeHeart. Tempke garnered one Big Ten Athlete of the Week accolade this season, taking the February 2 award.

The conference office also announced honorees from each team for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, with senior captain Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) being chosen as NU's nominee. The 11 student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. These student-athletes are now candidates for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
