EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 17 Northwestern scored eight runs in the final three innings Friday against Indiana at Sharon J. Drysdale Field to run-rule the Hoosiers, 8-0 (6) and win the opener of the series between the two teams.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 27-10 overall and 7-2 in the conference. Indiana falls to 20-18-1, 3-6 in the Big Ten.
The first two innings of the game went quickly and quietly for both teams, while Northwestern starter Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) sat down the first 11 batters she faced.
After breaking through for the game's first hits in the third inning, the Wildcats scored its first runs in the fourth. Freshman Tammy Williams (El Dorado Springs, Mo./Osceola) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then stole second base. Junior Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) drove Williams home with a double off the left-centerfield fence, her 16th of the season, for a 1-0 lead. Cooper moved to third on the throw home.
Cooper entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in doubles per game, and matched her own Northwestern single-season record with the two-bagger. She already has the Wildcats' career lead in the category.
Senior Jamie Dotson (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) drew a walk to put runners on first and third. Freshman Ann Schraufnagel (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) pinch-ran for Dotson.
Senior Kristen Amegin (West Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) grounded out to the pitcher to advance Schraufnagel to second, then freshman Erin Dyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) drove home Cooper with a single to right. Schraufnagel moved to third, then sprinted home later on a wild pitch for a 3-0 Wildcat lead. Alert base running from Dyer put her on third after the play.
Sophomore Darcy Sengewald (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) clubbed her second hit of the game, a double to left-center, to plate Dyer for a 4-0 advantage.
With Logan at the plate as NU's next batter, Indiana starter Mariangee Bogado collapsed in a heap in the circle after throwing a pitch. She was able to continue, and Logan stroked her second single of the game through the left side of the infield. With a 2-1 count on senior Sheila McCorkle (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei), Indiana elected to replace Bogado with Megan Roark. McCorkle flew out to end the inning.
The Wildcats picked the scoring right back up in the fifth, with Williams leading off the frame with a bomb over the right-field fence for a 5-0 lead. The homer was the team-leading eighth of the season for Williams.
Cooper followed the freshman with a single to left, then moved to second when Dotson laced a single back up the middle. Both runners advanced a bag on a wild pitch.
Dyer then knocked in Cooper with a ground ball single that snuck through the left side of the infield, moving Dotson to third and making the Northwestern lead six, 6-0. The inning would end with that score intact.
In the bottom of the fifth, the hits kept on coming. Logan poked a 3-2 single into right to lead off the inning, then moved to third when Indiana threw away McCorkle's sacrifice bunt. McCorkle advanced to second on a wild pitch.
With still no outs in the inning, Williams laced a double down the left-field line to score Logan and McCorkle and end the game in six innings, 8-0.
Canney (13-5) was masterful, throwing her 10th shutout of the season. She fanned 11 batters through six innings and allowed no walks and just a pair of hits, both of which nearly were caught with fantastic defensive attempts.
In the fourth inning, Jennilee Huddleston hit a rocket back up the middle, and Williams defied logic to lay out and glove the ball. She quickly righted herself and threw to first half a step late to get Huddleston. Indiana's Kim Richards doubled in the fifth inning on a ball McCorkle nearly caught with a full dive in front of her.
Canney now has struck out double-digit batters in each of her last five outings.
Logan finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored for the 'Cats, while Williams ended up 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Cooper also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Dyer collected a pair of hits, scored once and drove in two, while Sengewald finished 2-for-3 with one run batted in.
Logan and Dyer both stole a pair of bases, while Williams swiped one.
Northwestern returns to action at noon CT tomorrow, April 15, against Indiana at Sharon J. Drysdale Field. The game marks Senior Day for the Wildcats.
