EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern began its home schedule two weekends ago, dominating its Big Ten openers against Wisconsin and Iowa. Now, just two weeks later, the 'Cats will celebrate Senior Day during their final homestand of the year.
NU plays host to Indiana and Purdue this weekend, beginning at 4 p.m. Friday versus IU. The Wildcats again face the Hoosiers at noon Saturday before concluding the weekend with a noon doubleheader Sunday against Purdue.
The Wildcats opened their current seven-game homestand with a 9-0, five-inning victory over UIC Tuesday. After this weekend, Northwestern will host Notre Dame at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 18 in a game to be nationally televised on College Sports Television (CSTV). NU's final home game of 2006 is at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 20 against Loyola.
Still with a hefty chunk of their schedule left to play, the Wildcats will honor their senior class of Kristen Amegin (West Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove), Ashley Crane (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake), Jamie Dotson (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill), Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) and Sheila McCorkle (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei). The quintet was the first recruiting class to come to Northwestern under then-first-year head coach Kate Drohan, and the Wildcats have improved their record and performance in the NCAA Tournament in each of the group's first three years with the program.
In 2003, Northwestern qualified for its first NCAA Tournament in three years, compiling a 1-2 record before bowing out of the regional. The Wildcats returned in 2004 to win one more game and finish 2-2. Under the new tournament format in 2005, NU was seeded ninth overall and won its regional to advance to the Super Regional round of 16.
Senior Day is officially set for Saturday's noon CT game against Indiana.
