UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Northwestern's men's tennis team fell to 8-7 this year after it suffered a 6-1 defeat at Penn State Friday at the Sarni Tennis Center. Freshman Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Indenependent Study) earned the only Wildcat win of the day at No. 4 singles.
"They did a great job throughout the match," head coach Paul Torricelli said. "They came out playing well and we were behind them the entire match."
The Nittany Lions wasted little time getting on the board as they swept Northwestern in doubles competition.
Dwyer improved his Big Ten record to 2-2 when he topped the Nittany Lions' Michael James in straight sets at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-4.
Junior Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrügge) dropped a heartbreaker at No. 1 singles, falling in a tight third-set tiebreaker. Tempke was edged by Penn State's Mark Barry 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (5).
Junior Willy Lock's (Lima, Peru/Markham College) six-match win streak came to a close as he fell in straight sets to PSU's Malcom Scatliffe at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-3.
Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico/South Florida) and Matt Christian each fell in straight sets, while freshman Alexey Evstratenkov (Moscow, Russia/Moscow International Gymnasia) dropped his match to Adam Slatger at No. 5 singles 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Northwestern falls to 8-7 this season with the loss. The Wildcats look to get back on the winning track when they face Indiana at noon Sunday, April 2.
