BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Northwestern's men's tennis team dropped the doubles point, but rallied to take four of six matches in the singles competition to secure a 4-3 win over Indiana Sunday. With the team score tied at 3-3, senior captain Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) came through with a win at No. 5 singles to take the match for the Wildcats. With the win, Northwestern ended the Hoosiers' eight-match winning streak and improved its conference record to 3-2.

"I cannot say enough about how the guys bounced back today," head coach Paul Torricelli said. "We were so flat on Friday at Penn State and it really shook our confidence. To overcome a very good Indiana team on the road took a lot of heart."

Northwestern took the first win in doubles when Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrügge) and Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) topped David Bubenicek and Peter Antons at No. 2 doubles 8-6.

Indiana evened the doubles score when Neil Kenner and Michael McCarthy earned the victory over Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico/South Florida) and Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study) at No. 3 doubles 8-5.

IU then clinched the doubles match with a win at No. 1. Dmytro Ishtuganov and Dara McLoughlin took an 8-5 win over Shaechterle and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice), to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.

The 'Cats fell behind 2-0 when Ishtuganov beat No. 51 Tempke at No. 1 singles 7-6, 6-2.

The Wildcats responded with two-straight singles wins to even the score at 2-2.

Gomez earned a win in straight sets over McLoughlin at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-4, to cut the Hoosier lead in half before Lock won at No. 2, beating Bubenicek 7-5, 6-1.

IU regained the lead when Kenner beat Dwyer at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-3, but Alexey Evstratenkov (Moscow, Russia/Moscow International Gymnasia) tied the score at 3-3 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Arnaud Roussel at No. 6 singles.

With the match on the line, Northwestern's lone senior came up big at No. 5 singles. Shaechterle won in straight sets with two tiebreaker wins 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3).

"Everything seemed to point toward us losing," Torricelli said. "Tempke and Christian were really hurting and both have been struggling with nagging arm injuries. Indiana had just beaten Penn State 6-1. It started raining during the warm-up and we moved indoors. Our best chance against the Hoosiers would seem to be outdoors. They are a big serving team and their indoor courts are very fast. It looked very bad for us, especially down 2-0. But you could sense that we had a lot of fight in doubles. We were very competitive and slowly it started to turn our way. Once we got the momentum it became an extremely close match."

With the win, Northwestern stands at 9-7, 3-2 in league play.

The Wildcats return to action when they host Minnesota at noon Saturday, April 8 at the Combe Tennis Center.
