EVANSTON, Ill. -- Juniors Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) and Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) have been named the Big Ten Player and Pitcher of the Week for their play in leading the Wildcats to a perfect 6-0 record in Hawaii.
Cooper batted a team-best .471 (8-for-17) with six RBIs, a .647 slugging percentage and a .550 on-base percentage. Against San Diego State, Cooper tallied two doubles and drove in a pair of runs. She followed with a 3-for-4 performance against Hawaii, scoring once and driving in a pair of runs.
Cooper's honor is the second of her career. The reigning Big Ten Player of the Year also earned the weekly award May 3, 2004.
Canney compiled a 3-0 record and a 0.67 earned run average as Northwestern won the championship of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational. She opened the trip with 13 strikeouts, one shy of her then-career high in a three-hit shutout against Kansas. Canney then defeated San Diego State with a seven-strikeout performance for a 6-2 victory.
Canney saved her best for last, ending the weekend with a career-high 17 strikeouts, while giving up only one hit against Hawaii. Canney's honor is her fourth; she also was honored in 2004 (April 26) and 2005 (Feb. 8 and April 4).
Northwestern leaves Hawaii for Southern California Wednesday, and will next take on Cal State Fullerton in a March 23rd doubleheader.
