HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Every Northwestern starter reached base safely and senior Jamie Dotson (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in a 6-2 NU win over Kansas Monday in Hawaii.
The game was an addition to the Wildcats' schedule after rainouts on the final day of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational canceled a pair of games for the Jayhawks and one for the 'Cats. Due to the washouts, Northwestern won the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.
With Monday's win over the Jayhawks, the Wildcats improve to 15-6 overall on the year. Kansas falls to 15-14.
Northwestern jumped out to a big lead early. With one out in the first, junior Katie Logan (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) singled up the middle, then junior Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) dropped a single in front of the centerfielder, advancing Logan to third. Cooper took second on the throw.
Senior Kristen Amegin (West Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) drew a walk to load the bases, then Dotson dropped a ball to the third baseman, whose throw home was too late to get Logan. With no one covering first on the play, Dotson was credited with a single.
With the bases still juiced and only one out, senior Sheila McCorkle (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) drove a long single down the left-field line, plating Cooper and Amegin for a 3-0 Northwestern lead. Dotson moved to third and McCorkle to second on the throw.
Kansas replaced starter Kassie Humphreys with Serena Settlemier after the McCorkle single. Freshman Ann Schraufnagel (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) replaced Dotson at third, then scored on a passed ball to cap the Wildcats' first-inning scoring at four runs.
In each of the first two innings, a Jayhawk runner reached third with only one out. In both frames, Northwestern starter Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) struck out the next two batters she faced to end the inning with no damage done.
In the bottom of the third, Cooper led off the inning with walk before Dotson blasted her third home run of the season over the centerfield fence to push Northwestern's lead to six, 6-0.
Dotson's three RBIs in the game give her 94 for her career, moving her into fifth-place on Northwestern's career list.
The Jayhawks got on the board in the top of the fourth, using a leadoff double to eventually score one run and chip the Wildcats' lead to five, 6-1.
Kansas added one more run to its total with a two-out triple in the top of the seventh.
Foster picked up her 10th win of the season to improve to 10-4 overall. She allowed two runs on four hits and four walks with 10 strikeouts in the game.
McCorkle finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Cooper was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Freshman Erin Dyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) and sophomore Darcy Sengewald (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) both clubbed doubles for the 'Cats.
