No. 17 Wildcats Outduel Lancers, 4-3

HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Senior Kristen Amegin (West Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) hit the 30th home run of her career and Northwestern erased an early 3-0 deficit to defeat Longwood, 4-3, Friday at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational.

With the win, Northwestern improves to 12-6 overall, 2-0 in the tournament. Longwood falls to 11-13 on the year, 1-2 in the event.

Longwood scored the first run of the game in the top of the first. The initial two batters of the frame drew walks, then advanced one base on a passed ball. A squeeze bunt brought the runner from third home before Northwestern starter Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) struck out the next two batters to hold the Lancers to a 1-0 lead.

Longwood added two more runs to their lead in the third on a two-run home run to center field after a walk.

Northwestern earned it all back in the bottom half of the third. Freshman Tammy Williams (El Dorado Springs, Mo./Osceola) hit a one-out double to the fence in left, then scored when junior Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) doubled to nearly the same spot.

Williams now has a team-best eight-game hitting streak. Cooper's double was the 34th of her career, jumping her two spots on Northwestern's all-time list into a third-place tie with Anne Carpenter (1991-94) and Kelley Green (1993-96).

Amegin followed Cooper's double with the 30th home run of her career, knotting the game, 3-3.

The blast was the fifth of the season for Northwestern's all-time home run leader, and it gave her sole possession of 10th place on the Big Ten's career list.

The Wildcats grabbed the lead, 4-3, in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Sheila McCorkle (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) reached first on an error to lead off the inning, then senior Ashley Crane (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake) advanced her to second with a groundout.

McCorkle then stole third and scored when freshman Erin Dyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) singled up the middle after fouling off several pitches.

In the top of the sixth, Northwestern completed one of the rarest feats in softball -- the triple play. With runners on first and third and nobody out, the batter popped up to sophomore Darcy Sengewald (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) at third. The runner on first already had rounded second without tagging up, so Sengewald whipped the ball to Cooper at first for the second out. On the throw, the runner on third took off for home, and Cooper gunned the ball over to Amegin, who applied the tag for out number three.

Foster improved to 8-4 on the year with a complete game effort, allowing three runs -- two earned -- and four walks while striking out 11.

The Wildcats return to action at 2 p.m. CT Saturday, March 18, against San Diego State.
