RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- Playing in arguably the nation's toughest regular-season college golf tournament, Northwestern has started the Puerto Rico Classic on a solid note, posting a 3-over 291 for Sunday's first round.
The Wildcats, ranked 13th nationally, are tied for eighth place with No. 3 Oklahoma State. Alabama, ranked 31st, leads the tournament with an 8-under 280. Georgia Tech, the country's No. 2 team, is three strokes ahead of the Wildcats and Cowboys in seventh place, while No. 1 Georgia is in second place, one stroke back of the Crimson Tide.
Junior David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) led Northwestern with a 1-under 71. He is in 22nd place. Sophomore Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) fired an even-par 72, good enough for 25th place.
Junior Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and sophomore Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) are in 38th place after carding 2-over 74's. Senior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) shot a 7-over 79 and is in 76th place.
Purdue, the host school for this annual tourney, is in sixth place (1-under 287), while the three other Big Ten teams -- Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota -- are 16th, 16th and 18th, respectively.
Five players -- Brendon Todd (Georgia), Brett Stegmaier (Florida), Lenny Park (Arizona State), Keenan Farren (Texas) and Pablo Martin (Oklahoma State) -- currently lead the individual race with 4-under 68's.
Round number two is set for Monday.
