EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) was drafted by the expansion Philadelphia Force in the National Professional Fastpitch Senior Draft Feb. 15.
Foster was the first pick of the fourth round and the 24th pick overall. She was the fifth overall pick of the Force, and is one of four Big Ten student-athletes selected in the draft.
Foster is an NFCA third-team All-American who ranks second on Northwestern's career strikeouts list with 811 and has a career 1.44 ERA.
Former Wildcat teammate Carri Leto recently became a member of the expansion Force, signing as a free agent in 2006. Leto became the first Northwestern female student-athlete to be drafted by a professional team when the New York/New Jersey Juggernaut selected her in 2004. Leto is a two-time NPF All-Star at second base.
Seniors in college do not declare for the draft, but are eligible to be selected by a franchise. That franchise then holds the rights to the player until she has completed her collegiate eligibility, at which point she is able to sign with the team and compete for an available roster spot.
