IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Northwestern's 13th-ranked wrestling team won three of the last four matches, but couldn't overcome an early deficit and fell to No. 9 Iowa 20-16 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Sunday.

No. 8 John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) gave the Wildcats an early 4-0 lead with a major decision victory over Trent Goodale at 125 lbs. Velez used four takedowns and two three-point takedowns to control the match and cruise to a 16-2 win.

At 133 lbs., Daniel Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) fell to Iowa's Daniel Dennis, 8-2. Quintela scored on two escapes, but Dennis' offense proved too much as he took the match for the Hawkeyes.

With Northwestern leading 4-3, a pair of ranked wrestlers took the mat when No. 6 Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward) faces Iowa's 14th-ranked Alex Tsirtsis at 141 lbs. Lang went up 2-0 early on a takedown, but Tsirtsis came back to take a 5-2 lead with 2:18 remaining in the first. Lang responded with a reversal at the end of the period and went into the second round trailing 5-4.

Lang regained the lead with a reversal in the second and entered the third round with a 6-5 lead. Tsirtsis began the period with a reversal, but Lang responded with an escape to tie the score at 7-7. Tsirtsis tallied another reversal with just one minute left to wrestle and went on to the 10-7 win with riding time.

Marty Gould (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) then took the mat for the 'Cats to face the Hawkeyes' second-ranked Ty Eustice. While Gould tallied an escape in the first period, Esutice got ahead early and took a 16-6 major decision win.

With Northwestern trailing 10-4, Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair) took the mat with Iowa's seventh-ranked Joe Johnston. Entering the second round trailing 2-0, Hagel earned an escape to cut the deficit in half. Johnston responded with two more takedowns, however, and Hagel trailed 8-4 heading into the final round. There, he maintained control and walked off with the 14-6 major decision win.

At 165 lbs., 19th-ranked Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) faced Eric Luedke. The two went back and forth in the first two rounds, with neither wrestler recording points. Luedke finally broke the scoreless tie with a takedown midway through the third round. Durkee then tied the score at 2-2 with a reversal with 55 seconds remaining, but Luedke scored an escape, takedown and two-point nearfall to take the match with riding time, 8-2.

Second-ranked Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) finally got things going again for the Wildcats with a pin over Iowa's Ben Stedman. Herbert got all over Stedman from the very start and accumulated a 10-1 lead on a series of takedowns and nearfalls before recording the pin at 4:21 and getting Northwestern back into the mix.

With the Wildcats trailing 17-10, No. 11 Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) faced Iowa's seventh-ranked Paul Bradley. Bradley went up 2-0 early in the first period with a takedown, but Tamillow notched an escape to enter the second period down 2-1. In the second, Bradley scored on an escape to go up 3-1, but Tamillow cut the lead to one with an escape early in the third period.

While Bradley was hit with a late stalling call, it did no good for the `Cats as Bradley took the decision, 3-2.

Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) then got Northwestern back on track with a 6-3 win over Dan Erekson. While Delguyd fell behind early, he responded with a strong second period and held a 4-2 lead heading into the third. There, Erekson cut the lead to one with an escape, but Delguyd notched a takedown with 25 seconds remaining to take the decision.

With NU down, 20-13, eighth-ranked Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) took a 9-5 victory over Michael Bucklin. Fox tallied four takedowns and a series of escapes to take the decision, but the win couldn't help the Wildcats overcome their five-consecutive losses earlier in the match.

With the loss, Northwestern falls to 9-5 on the season, 4-3 in the Big Ten.

The Wildcats resume action for their regular-season finale at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 as they host Indiana at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
