EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's 13th-ranked wrestling team fell behind early, but won four of the final five matches to take a 19-15 win over Indiana Friday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats earn their fifth conference win of the season with the victory -- their most Big Ten wins in over 10 seasons.
At 125 lbs., No. 7 John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) kicked things off for the Wildcats by facing Indiana's top-ranked Joe Dubuque in the night's first match.
The two battled to a scoreless first period, but Dubuque went up by one with a standup early in the second. Dubuque was awarded another point when Velez was called for his second stalling penalty and began the third period with a 2-0 lead.
Velez cut the lead to 2-1 with an escape with 1:45 remaining, but Dubuque earned a takedown and a two-point nearfall with 30 seconds remaining to take a 6-1 win.
At 133 lbs., Daniel Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) fell behind early to the Hoosiers 16th-ranked Andrae Hernandez. Trailing 9-0, Quintela earned a second-period escape for his first points, then followed that with a takedown in the third period to prevent a major decision. Hernandez walked off with the win, however, and the Wildcats trailed 6-0 heading into the 141-pound weight class.
There, No. 8 Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward) brought the 'Cats back with a big win over Nick Spatola. Lang earned takedowns in each of the first three periods and an escape to enter the third period with a 5-0 lead.
Lang increased his lead to 6-0 when Spatola was whistled for his second stalling call and he left the mat with a 7-1 decision with riding time.
Marty Gould (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) took the mat next for the Wildcats and dropped a tight match to Indiana's Matt Cooper. Cooper earned a first-period takedown, but Gould responded with an escape to enter the second period trailing 2-1.
Gould tied the match at 2-2 with another escape 15 seconds into the second and took the lead after Cooper was whistled for a technical violation. Cooper tied the match with an escape with 1:20 remaining and the two went scoreless for the remainder of the match.
Cooper then tallied a takedown at the beginning of sudden victory to claim the 5-3 win.
With Northwestern trailing 9-3, Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy) Hagel held his own versus Indiana's eighth-ranked Brandon Becker, but fell in the end. While Hagel had Becker on his back and nearly earned the fall in the first period, Becker scored the first points of the match with a reversal midway through the second, then went up 4-0 after a two-point nearfall to end the period. After taking a point for riding time, Becker went on to a 5-0 win.
After the 10-minute break, 19th-ranked Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) won a huge match for the Wildcats versus Indiana's Max Dean. After a scoreless first, Durkee struck first with an escape in the second period.
While Dean got his riding time up to 43 seconds, the two reset after the officials time out and Durkee rode Dean to get his riding time to 13 seconds.
Durkee held on for the remainder of the match and edged Dean, 1-0.
With Northwestern trailing 12-6, Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) came through with another typical performance versus IU's Marc Bennett -- a pin that changed the entire complexion of the match. Herbert took an early 4-1 lead before notching his 11th pin of the year at 1:32, tying the team score at 12-12.
With the `Cats back in the thick of things, No. 10 Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) gave Northwestern its first lead of the match with a decision over Joe Curran at 184 lbs. After a scoreless first period, Tamillow notched a takedown and an escape in the second to go up 3-0. Curran tallied an escape late in the second, but Tamillow entered the final period with the 3-1 lead and 28 seconds of riding time.
Curran made the score 3-2 with a third-period escape, but Tamillow held tough and won 4-2 with riding time, giving NU a 15-12 lead.
Twelfth-ranked Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) took the mat next and dominated Indiana's 10th-ranked Brady Richardson. Delguyd came through with a huge two-leg takedown midway through the first, then got Brady on his back and earned the three-point takedown.
Richardson began the second with an escape, but Delguyd shot, grabbed Richardson's left leg and sent him to the mat for his second takedown of the match.
Leading 7-2 and with almost two minutes of riding time, Delguyd started the third period with an escape. While he was called for his second stalling penalty, Delguyd took Richardson down again and earned the 11-3 major decision win, clinching the match for Northwestern.
At 285 lbs., ninth-ranked Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) faced Indiana's Dave Herman. After a scoreless first period, Herman tallied an escape and a takedown in the second to take a 3-0 lead.
Fox responded with an escape and a takedown in the third, but Herman took a 4-3 lead with an escape. Fox came close to taking the lead with a two-legged takedown with 20 seconds left, but the referee called out of bounds. Herman held on and took the match 5-3 with riding time.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 10-5 on the season and 5-3 in the Big Ten.
The 'Cats return to action Saturday and Sunday, March 4 and 5 at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships, which will be held at Indiana University.
