TEMPE, Ariz. -- No. 16 Northwestern faced its third All-America pitcher in its first four games Saturday night against No. 4 Texas at the Kajikawa Classic, and this time the Wildcats came out on the low end of a 3-0 final score.
With the loss, Northwestern falls to 2-2 on the year, with both of those losses coming against top-5 ranked squads. Texas improves to 3-1 on the season.
Wildcat starter Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) pitched a solid game, striking out seven while allowing three runs, three hits and three walks. She took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year.
Texas hurler Cat Osterman (2-0) lived up to her two-time National Player of the Year billing, however, no-hitting Northwestern while walking one. She has not allowed a hit in either of her two starts so far this season.
In the second inning, senior Kristen Amegin (West Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) drew a leadoff base on balls, then advanced to second on a passed ball. She would advance no farther and would prove to be NU's lone baserunner of the game.
Freshman Tammy Williams (El Dorado Springs, Mo./Osceola) nearly earned a hit with rocket toward short in the third, but a leaping grab by Desiree Williams kept Cat's no-no intact.
Texas struck first in the third inning. After walks put runners on first and second, a double brought home one run and put runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly to deep center plated another to give the Longhorns a 2-0 lead.
Texas added one more run in the bottom of the sixth.
Northwestern concludes its Kajikawa Classic at 10 a.m. CT tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 12, against Syracuse.
