EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) has been named the Big Ten's Co-Swimmer of the Week after turning in the best performance of any conference student-athlete at the U.S. Open last weekend.
Bubolz accumulated 42 individual points to finish eighth overall in the meet, ahead of several NCAA champions and world-record holders. His most impressive performance came in the 100-meter fly, where he was second with an NCAA 'A' time of 53.45 to finish behind only Ian Crocker, the current world-record holder in the event.
He also made the championship finals in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle, swimming a 23.37 in the 50 to finish seventh and a 51.35 in the 100 to end up sixth. Both of those efforts were NCAA 'B' standards.
Bubolz swam the fly leg of NU's 400-medley relay, which finished in 10th place. The Wildcats as a team were third among Universities represented at the prestigious USA Swimming meet.
Bubolz's Big Ten honor is the first of his career. He is the fourth Wildcat to earn the award this season, joining teammates Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) and Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) -- who has won twice.
The Wildcats now have earned the conference office's weekly swimming honor after every single one of their competitions in 2006-07. Earlier in the year, NU won four-consecutive conference weekly awards, marking the first time in Big Ten history that has happened.
