Wildcats Finish Third Among Universities at U.S. Open

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Northwestern finished third among Universities at the U.S. Open, earning three more finals swims Saturday on the final day of the USA Swimming meet.
The Wildcats' five swimmers accumulated 118 points during the three-day event, placing behind Michigan in first and Florida in second. Individually, junior Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) was the eighth-highest scorer among men at the meet, totalling 42 points.
On Saturday, Bubolz took sixth in the 100-meter free, swimming a 51.32 in the prelims before turning in a 51.35 in the finals.
Sophomore Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) swam the prelims in the 100-meter free, placing 13th with a 52.06 before pulling out of the finals to concentrate on the 200-meter fly. In that event, Nilsson had a 2:03.23 first swim to earn a spot in the B-final before finishing 12th with a 2:03.72 in the finals.
Sophomore John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep) competed in the 200 breast, qualifying for a second swim in the C-final with a 2:25.48 during the prelimanary heats. He placed 20th overall after turning in a 2:25.90 during the finals.
