EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern place-kicker Joel Howells (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) was named a Wuerffel Trophy finalist today by the Wuerffel Trophy Committee. He is one of 11 finalists.
Nominees must carry a minimum grade point average of 3.0, be a first-team player and/or major contributor on their team and participate consistently in community service events.
Howells, who is enrolled in graduate school at Northwestern and is in his final year of eligibility, is involved in numerous activities on and off campus.
Howells is Northwestern's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee football representative, playing an integral part in SAAC programming and community service efforts, which includes the holiday food drive, holiday book drive and speaking with local schools and youth organizations. He is also a regular volunteer for the American Cancer Society Generation Fit program and he assists with the YMCA Spring Break programming. In addition, Howells is a mentor for an at-risk male student for the Junior Wildkit Mentoring Program in Evanston.
"Any award of this nature that Joel receives is well-deserved," said NU head coach Pat Fitzgerald. "He's a special person."
Howells ranks sixth on Northwestern's all-time made field goals list (20) and second on the school's career made PAT's list (74).
Earlier this season, Howells was one of 11 NCAA Division I-A players named to the AFCA's Good Works Team.
