Day One Complete at U.S. Open

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Northwestern student-athletes earned championship heat swims in four different events Thursday during the first day of action at USA Swimming's U.S. Open hosted by Purdue.
Senior Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) led the way by qualifying for the championship heats in both the 200-meter IM and the 100-meter breast. He placed fifth in the 200 IM final with a time of 2:04.65 and eighth in the 100 breast with a swim of 1:03.83.
Junior Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) qualified eighth for the 50-meter free before moving up a spot to seventh with a 23.37 during the finals.
Sophomore Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) earned a spot in the 400-meter free championship heat, and finished in eighth with a 3:59.87.
The Wildcats also earned second swims in the B- and C-finals, with Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija) taking 15th during prelims of the 50-meter free before moving up to 14th in the B-final with a 23.69.
Sophomore John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep) tied for the last spot in the C-final during prelims of the 100-meter breast with a 1:06.33 before jumping up to 19th during the finals with a 1:05.90.
