Northwestern Drops Road Contest to Stanford, 58-53

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Northwestern came back from a 12-point deficit to tie the game, but Stanford scored the final 5 points to notch a 58-53 victory. Lawrence Hill scored a career-high 21 points, including a key basket in the final 30 seconds, to lead the Cardinal. The Wildcats (1-2), who were led by Tim Doyle's 13 points, return home to face Brown University on Tuesday.
Taj Finger added 12 points as the Cardinal (3-1) won their 47th in 53 home games.
Vince Scott added 11 points.Stanford held the lead most of the contest but wasn't able to shake the Wildcats. The Cardinal grabbed a 52-40 lead on consecutive jumpers from Mitch Johnson in the final six minutes but Northwestern responded with 11 unanswered points - highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers and a left hook by the 6-10 senior center Scott - to pull with one with 2:47 left to play.
Doyle hit a pair of free throws 47 seconds later to tie it at 53.
Cardinal freshman seven-footer Robin Lopez missed his only attempt in the first half and grabbed just two rebounds. He was a different player in the second half, making his presence felt with a pair of blocked shots.
Hill came up with a critical rebound of a missed Stanford free throw which led to an inside basket to put the Cardinal 57-53 heading into the final seconds. Hill finished with a game-high nine rebounds.
