EVANSTON, Ill. -- After notching its first win of the season Tuesday against cross-town rival DePaul, Northwestern (1-1) will head west to Palo Alto, Calif., to take on the Stanford Cardinal (2-1) at 9 p.m. CT Friday night at Maples Pavilion. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net Bay Area which can be viewed on DirecTV channel 654 and of course heard live over the airwaves on WGN Radio (720 AM).
The NU-Stanford Series
Friday's game is the third meeting between the two schools. They first met on Dec. 26, 1962 in Los Angeles at the L.A. Classic--a 62-61 Wildcat victory. The other meeting was Nov. 30, 1968 as the Wildcats dropped their season opener in Palo Alto 64-58.
Last Time Out
Craig Moore scored 10 points and hit a key 3-pointer, and Tim Doyle and Kevin Coble scored nine points apiece to lead Northwestern to a 49-39 victory over DePaul on Tuesday night. Moore was just 2-for-6 from the field, but his 3 with 1:53 remaining extended the Wildcats' lead to 43-36. Doyle added five rebounds and six assists, while Coble hit 4-of-7 field goals, but neither team shot well. Northwestern (1-1) was 18-of-45 overall and 4-of-17 on 3-pointers. DePaul (0-2) was as bad, at 16-of-47--including 3-of-16 from three. But Northwestern protected the ball, committing five turnovers to the Blue Demons' 15. Coble hit a 3, reverse layup and jump hook in the opening minutes of the second half. And Sterling Williams added a pull-up jumper as Northwestern turned a four-point halftime deficit into a 29-25 lead. DePaul tied it at 29 when Marcus Heard hit the first of two free throws, Karron Clarke grabbed the rebound and Draelon Burns made a 3. But a 3-pointer by Moore and a steal and breakaway layup by Jeff Ryan gave Northwestern a 36-31 lead with 8:57 remaining. Northwestern was 7-for-26 in the first half, hitting 1-of-10 3-pointers, and was scoreless until Vince Scott hit a short hook 6:42 into the game. But DePaul wasn't much better, hitting 9-of-22 and missing all six attempts from the outside. Coble was awarded the Waldo Fisher-Frank McGrath Award as the MVP of the annual NU-DePaul game.
Noting the DePaul Game
Moore Saves Best For Last
Craig Moore has scored all 16 (8.0 ppg) of his points after halftime this season. Tuesday in the win over DePaul, Moore scored all 10 points in the second half--seven of those in the final 1:40 to help the Wildcats pull away for the win.
Taking Care of the Rock
Northwestern always gives itself a chance to win by keeping errors to a minimum. And that was the case once again Tuesday night as the Wildcats committed just five turnovers--two coming on shot clock violations--compared to 15 total for DePaul. It marked the 37th time in the Bill Carmody era that the Wildcats have recorded single-digit turnover games. They are 24-13 in those games.
Every Class Represented
Through the first two games of the season, the Wildcats have started a fifth-year (Doyle), a fourth-year (Scott), a third-year (Williams), a second-year (Moore) and a first-year in true-freshman Coble together.
Coble Wins Fisher-McGrath Award
The annual NU-DePaul game MVP honors (Waldo Fisher-Frank McGrath Award) went to NU's Kevin Coble this season as the freshman scored nine points and keyed a second half run that put the Wildcats out in front for good in the win over the Blue Demons.
Newcomers Shine in Debut
In their first outings wearing the purple and white last Friday against Cornell, freshman Kevin Coble and junior transfer Jason Okrzesik impressed. Coble recorded 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting with one 3-pointer to go along with seven rebounds while Okrzesik provided a spark off the bench, sinking 3-of-5 3-pointers for 11 points. Sophomore Sterling Williams had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Doyle Sets Two Career Highs
Tim Doyle recorded new career highs with eight assists and seven rebounds in the game against Cornell. He played the entire 40 minutes and tallied 11 points.
Diaper Dandies
This is by far one of the youngest teams head coach Bill Carmody has coached in his career. In his first season in Evanston in 2000-01 he had seven freshmen and zero seniors. This year he has six freshmen, four sophomores and two junior-eligible players who did not see action last season.
Noting Bill Carmody
Though it sometimes gets overlooked, head coach Bill Carmody has turned Northwestern into a consistent winner. Over the past six full years under Carmody the Wildcats have won 82 games, the best six-year win total in the program's history. Northwestern has won at least 11 games in all of Carmody's seasons--a program first--and the first time the 'Cats have reached double figures in the win column six straight seasons since 1938.
'Cats vs. The Pac-10
Here is how Northwestern has fared against the rest of the Pac-10. NU is 12-31 all-time against Pac-10 foes and 2-2 under Bill Carmody in the last six years.
Washington - 2-5 Washington State - 3-2 Oregon - 0-2 Oregon State - 1-4 Stanford - 1-1 California - 1-2 UCLA - 1-3 USC - 3-6 Arizona - 0-2 Arizona State - 2-4
'Cats on the Tube
Northwestern will have as many as four nationally televised regular-season game this season. The 'Cats will face Miami (Fla.) in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on ESPN2 at home Nov. 28 before opening the Big Ten portion of the schedule Wed., Jan. 3 on ESPNU. After an ESPN2 game at home with Illinois Feb. 27, there could be one more Feb. 27 or 28 on a network still to be determined.
Hardy Joins Coaching Staff
Northwestern lost one of its top assistant coaches over the summer in Craig Robinson who accepted the head coaching job at Brown. But coach Carmody didn't have to look far to find a replacement as he brought on former Wildcat great Tavaras Hardy, who still holds the record for most career games played at Northwestern. Hardy, a two-time all-Big Ten selection, still holds the Northwestern record for most games played in a career with 118 and ranks in the top 20 in seven major categories. He ranks second with 113 starts, fourth with 101 blocked shots, 10th with 640 rebounds, 11th with 227 assists and 98 steals and 20th with 1,122 career points--one of only 27 Wildcats to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau.
Up Next
Northwestern returns to Evanston to begin a five-game homestand beginning with a Tuesday, Nov. 21 home date with the Brown Bears who are led by former NU assistant coach Craig Robinson. Game time is 7 p.m.
