Seniors Enjoy Strong Day at Big Ten Singles Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich -- Northwestern completed its first day at the Big Ten Singles Championships hosted by the University of Michigan. Seniors Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) and Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium LohbrÜgge) won two matches Saturday to reach the round of 16.
Lock took down Michael Dierberger from Wisconsin to start his tournament, 7-6(2), 6-3 and then defeated Minnesota's Sion Wilkins, 6-3, 6-3. The senior will face Ohio State freshman Justin Kronauge in the 3rd round.
Tempke defeated Guillaume St. Maurice from Penn State in his first round match, 7-6(8), 1-6, 6-2. He had less trouble in his second match with Indiana's Peter Antos, knocking off the sophomore in two sets, 6-2, 7-6(4). Tempke will take on Andres Osario from Minnesota in the round of 16.
"Willy and Christian played two good matches, especially Willy, who was really tested," head coach Paul Torricelli said. They will face two good players in the 3rd round and it will be a challenge."
The third Wildcat senior, Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice), toppled 13th-seeded Raoul Schwark in the first round, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-3, but injury forced him to withdraw from his match against Michigan's Peter Aarts. After dropping the first set 2-6, Christian won the second set 6-1 before retiring.
Junior Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico) fell to 8th-seeded David Bubenicek from Indiana in the first round 6-1, 6-2, while freshman Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) dropped his match in three sets.
Sophomores Alexey Evstratenkov (Moscow, Russia/Moscow International Gymnasia) and Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) also fell in the first round.
Sanborn, Evstratenkov and Dwyer will be in consolation draw action Saturday.
