Recap |  Box Score |  Quotes

  • Northwestern dropped to 3-8 overall, 1-6 in the Big Ten with the loss. This was the 19th time Northwestern has face the Associated Press No. 1-ranked team. It was the eighth time that the Wildcats have faced Ohio State when the Buckeyes were ranked No. 1.

  • Northwestern closes out the 2006 season next Saturday, playing host to in-state rival Illinois. It will be the 100th all-time meeting between the two programs. Northwestern has won the last three Sweet Sioux Tomahawk Trophy games versus the Fighting Illini. Kickoff is set for noon (ESPN360).

  • Northwestern actually held a 235 to 229 advantage in total offensive yards at halftime, but four turnovers and a blocked punt led to all 33 Ohio State points and the Wildcats trailed 33-10. Northwestern finished with a season-high tying five turnovers.

  • For the fourth straight game (his first four career starts), quarterback C.J. Bachér threw for over 200 yards, completing 17-of-28 passes for 212 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

  • Running back Tyrell Sutton figured prominently in the Wildcats' passing attack, catching a game-high seven passes for a game-best 75 yards. (His career single-game bests are 10 receptions for 89 yards vs. Purdue, in 2005). He caught a career-long 34-yard pass in the first quarter. Sutton also finished with 57 rushing yards, giving him 132 all-purpose yards. He now has eclipsed the 3,000-yard mark for all-purpose yardage and ranks 12th all-time with Jim Pooler (3,023) on NU's all-time list.

  • Sutton's 57 rushing yards boosts his single-season total to 890, leaving him 110 shy of the 1,000-yard mark. Sutton has 2,364 career rushing yards, which is still seventh-best on NU's all-time list.

  • Wide receiver Shaun Herbert, who caught all four of his passes (57 yards) in the first quarter, extended his consecutive reception string to 35 games. He entered the week with the nation's eighth-longest reception streak. Herbert is moved into fourth place on NU's all-time receptions list, passing Mark Philmore (2002-05). Herbert has 164 career receptions with one game to play.

  • Herbert also moved closer to fourth place on NU's career receiving yardage list. He now has 1,849 all-time yards, 24 yards shy of fourth place.

  • Wide receiver Rasheed Ward caught a season-high four passes for 38 yards.

  • Freshman Sherrick McManis made another start at cornerback and recorded his first career interception against OSU's Troy Smith. It was just the fourth interception of Smith's sterling 2006 season.

  • Linebacker Adam Kadela, a Columbus native, led the Wildcats with 12 tackles, which included a TFL. Fellow linebacker Eddie Simpson chipped in with eight tackles.

  • Northwestern recorded its 20th sack of the year. Demetrius Eaton and Corey Wootton earned 0.5 sacks on the play.

  • Place-kicker Joel Howells kicked his 21st career field goal (sixth all-time at NU) and his 75th career PAT (second all-time).
