Wildcats Set to Begin Play at All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. -- Seniors Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium LohbrÜgge), Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) and Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) begin play Thursday at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships. Tempke is in the singles draw and the tandem of Lock and Christian won three matches in two days to qualify for the doubles draw.
Tempke will take on Jakob Klaeson, a qualifier from Mississippi, Thursday at 11 a.m. If Tempke advances, he could face No. 2 seed Luigi D'Agord from Miami.
Lock and Christian will face Georgia Tech's Eric Molnar and David North Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The duo qualified for the doubles draw by defeating Denver's Adam Holmstrom and Niklas Persson Wednesday, 8-4.
"They played as well as they could play," assistant coach Nick Carless said. "If they keep returning serves like they did today, they can definitely make some noise."
It has been a busy two days for Lock. He fell in the second round of the qualifying singles draw Tuesday morning in a long three-set match. He returned to the court early Tuesday afternoon to team with Christian in the first round of the doubles qualifying draw. They defeated a team from TCU, 8-5. He returned to the court for a third time on Tuesday with Christian and they knocked off a pair from BYU, 8-6. Lock and Christian played and won their third round match Wednesday afternoon. Lock totaled 68 games of tennis in just over 24 hours.
"The way Willy is built allows him to play that kind of schedule," Carless said. "It is tough out there because with the wind, points never seem to end. You spend a lot of time running around in the heat."
