EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern sophomore Chelsy Hyser (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after setting a school record with 15 blocks Saturday against Michigan.
Hyser's 15 blocks -- comprised of two solos and 13 block assists -- broke the previous NU mark of 14, reached by Erika Lange in both 2000 and 2001. The 13 block assists tied Lange's school block assists record, set in both of her 14 total block performances.
Hyser's effort tied for eighth-best in Big Ten history, and was the most blocks since Penn State's Robyn Guokas had 15 on Oct. 7, 2000, against the Wolverines.
Hyser is Northwestern's second Defensive Player of the Week honoree this season, following freshman libero Kate Nobilio (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg), who earned the nod on Oct. 16.
