Evanston, Ill. -- Northwestern's defense gave one of its best efforts of the season, but it wasn't enough as Iowa edged the Wildcats, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field. The Wildcat defense held strong against 17 Iowa shots and six corners. Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) recorded NU's only goal of the afternoon.
"Our team fought hard the entire game," Head Coach Kelly McCollum said. "We never gave up and we stuck together as a team. I am proud of how we played today."
Iowa had several chances to score early, but NU's prevention defense contained the Hawkeye attack early. It wasn't until nearly 29 minutes into the match that Iowa got on the board. Meghan Beamsderfer found Katie Naughton for Iowa's first score.
Northwestern (7-10, 1-4) continued to battle, and two minutes before halftime, Cassie Miller (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) fed the ball from the right side into Putnam who muscled the ball past Iowa's charging goalie. It was Putnam's team-best sixth goal on the season.
After a back-and-forth second half, Iowa's Roz Ellis broke the 1-1 tie, shooting the ball from the left side into the corner of the cage with three minutes left in the game. Northwestern had two corners in the last three minutes but were unable to convert.
Emily Kyle (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University H.S.) recorded seven saves on the day.
The Wildcats return to action next Sunday (Oct. 29) for theie final regular-season match when they travel to Ann Arbor to take on the Wolverines in a noon showdown.
