Ann Arbor, Mich. -- Northwestern dropped its final contest of the 2006 season to No. 16 Michigan, 3-1, Sunday at Ocker Field in Ann Arbor. Sophomore Alexandra Quinn (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) scored Northwestern's lone goal, her team-best sixth on the season.

The Wolverines struck first, scoring in the first four minutes of the contest thanks to a goal by Lucia Belassi. Northwestern (7-11, 1-5) kept the 16th-ranked team's offense silent for the remainder of the half, while countering with a goal of its own. The Wildcats took advantage of one of their nine penalty corners when Quinn cleaned up a scuffle in front of the cage. Michigan's goalie stopped back-to-back rebounding shots only to have Quinn pick up the deflection and push it into the lower left corner of the cage. NU's goal was the result of a final push in the last two minutes of the half, when the 'Cats launched seven shots and three penalty corners.

The Wildcat defense kept Michigan off the scoreboard until eight minutes before the end of regulation when Belassi once again found the back of the cage. UM scored one final time a minute and a half later, boosting the score to 3-1.

Northwestern had its scoring chances, taking nine corners to UM's six, including five in the second half. Emily Kyle (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University H.S.) stopped five of Michigan's eight shots on goal.

The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 7-11 overall mark and a 1-5 conference record. Northwestern is the sixth seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will face third-seeded Penn State at 2 p.m. CT on Friday, Nov. 3 in Ann Arbor. The winner will meet the victor of second-seeded Indiana and seventh-seeded Michigan State on Saturday.
