Freshman Advances in Qualifying Draw of ITA Midwest Regional Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Wildcat Freshman Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas) advanced to the second round of the qualifying draw at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships Thursday, defeating Will Lofgren of Bradley, 6-1, 7-6(6). Sanborn will return to the court Friday morning at 8 a.m. for his second round match.

"He definitely went out there and played the tennis he knows how to play," assistant coach Nick Carless said. "It was a good first match in collegiate tennis."

Three Wildcat doubles teams will begin play in the main doubles draw. Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College), the fourth seed in the doubles draw, will take on Minnesota's Andres Osario and Sion Wilkins in their first action since advancing to the second round of the ITA All-American Championships. Sanborn and partner Alexey Evstratenkov (Moscow, Russia (Moscow International Gymnasia), as well as the duo of Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany (Gymnasium LohbrÜgge) and Juan Gomez (Mexico, City) will be in action Friday.
