Northwestern falls to 2-5 overall, 0-3 in the Big Ten with the loss. Northwestern, which had its two-game winning streak vs. Purdue snapped, now trails the overall series with the Boilermakers, 48-25-1.
Redshirt freshman Corey Wootton, a defensive end, notched his team-leading second interception of the year in the first half.
Northwestern picked up a pair of pass sacks by cornerbacks Marquice Cole and Deante Battle to up the Wildcats' season total to 15. Battle finished the game with three total TFL's (loss of 9 yards).
Cole, Battle and linebacker Nick Roach led Northwestern with 10 tackles apiece. Cole registered a career-high 10 tackles, while Battle added a career-best nine solo hits.
Running back Tyrell Sutton, who was slowed for the second straight week with a first-half injury, rushed for 82 yards on 10 carries. He now has 1,961 career rushing yards, which is eighth-best on Northwestern's all-time list. (He passed Stanley Davenport, 1984-87, 1,946 yards) Sutton notched his second-longest run of the season (54 yards) in the second half.
Wide receiver Shaun Herbert extended his consecutive reception string to 31 games. He began today's play with the nation's eighth-longest reception streak. Herbert caught a key 37-yard pass on the Wildcats' first-quarter touchdown drive. The 37-yard pass was his longest reception since grabbing a 62-yarder against Hawaii in the final game of 2004.
Place-kicker Joel Howells booted a season-long 42-yard field goal (into the wind) for his 18th career field goal. He is now alone in sixth place on NU's career field goals made list.
Punter Slade Larscheid, who placed a pair of punts inside the 20-yard line, including one at the 3-yard line, kicked a season-long 54-yarder.
Northwestern's defense held Purdue to 2.2 yards per rush attempt. The Boilermakers had 62 yards rushing on 28 carries.
