EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's tennis team pulled out wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but it wasn't enough as No. 31 North Carolina topped the Wildcats 5-2 Friday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Junior Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrügge) upset the Tarheels' fifth-ranked Raian Luchici at No. 1 singles while junior Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) picked up the win at No. 2 singles for the 'Cats.
North Carolina started the match by taking two of three doubles matches.
NU's No. 1 doubles team of Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) played tough versus UNC's team of Luchici and Brad Pomeroy, but fell to the nation's top-ranked team 8-5.
At No. 3 doubles, Lock and Gomez fell to Derek Porter and Sebastian Guejman 8-5.
Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) and Tempke teamed up for Northwestern's lone doubles win of the day at the No. 2 spot, topping David Stone and Lenny Gullen 8-6.
Down 1-0 after the doubles portion of the match, the Wildcats came into the singles portion looking to put points on the board. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the Tarheels took wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to start singles play, clinching the match.
At No. 1 singles, however, Tempke upset fifth-ranked Luchici 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (11) to put the 'Cats on the board.
Lock followed Tempke's lead by coming through with a straight-set victory over Pomeroy at No. 2 doubles 6-4, 7-6 (7).
At No. 3 singles, Gomez took the first set, but fell to Porter 6-4, 0-6, 5-7.
Dwyer suffered his first loss at No. 4 singles this season, falling to Guejman 6-2, 6-4.
Schaechterle dropped his match to UNC's Benjamin Carlotti 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, while Alexey Evstratenkov (Moscow, Russia/Moscow International Gymnasia) fell to Will Plyler 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
"This was an extremely hard fought match tonight--much closer than even 5-2," head men's tennis coach Paul Torricelli said. "Doubles again was crucial and we had a shot. Singles really came down to a couple of key points. UNC was a little too tough in the end."
With the loss, Northwestern evens its record at 3-3 this season.
The Wildcats return to action by facing No. 15 Wake Forest at 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 29.
