WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Northwestern's men's tennis team took two singles matches, but fell to No. 15 Wake Forest 5-2 Sunday at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. Junior Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrügge) topped the Demon Deacons' 11th-ranked Todd Paul at No. 1 singles, while junior Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) beat No. 35 Andrew Hamar at the No. 2 position.
Wake Forest began the match by taking two of three doubles matches from the Wildcats.
Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico/South Florida) and Lock topped Cory Parr and Joe Bates 8-6 at No. 3 for Northwestern's lone doubles win.
At No. 1 doubles, Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) dropped their match versus Paul and Hamar 8-3.
Tempke and Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) fell to Wake Forest's Mariusz Adamski and Brett Ross 8-3.
Down 1-0, Northwestern needed to rally in singles play, but they were unable to pick up enough victories to take the match.
The top of the Wildcat lineup performed well, however, as Tempke and Lock each picked up their second singles win of the weekend.
Two days after topping the nation's fifth-ranked player, Tempke came through with another upset--this time over Wake Forest's 11th-ranked Paul. Paul took the first set, but Tempke responded by taking the next two, earning a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win.
At No. 2 singles, Lock took a straight-set win over Hamar 6-2, 6-4.
Dwyer nearly pulled off a win over the 77th-ranked Ross, but fell in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Gomez fell at the No. 4 singles spot, as the Demon Deacons' Adamski won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Christian won his first set versus Parr, but was edged in the end at No. 5 singles 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Schaechterle fell in his match at No. 6 singles as Bates took the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
"We competed well and really stepped up our play from Friday (at North Carolina)," head men's tennis coach Paul Torricelli said. "Marc (Dwyer) played some of his best tennis of the year, but the match was clearly highlighted by the play of Christian (Tempke) and Willy (Lock). Willy put on a clinic Sunday and Christian capped off a great weekend by beating the 11th-ranked singles player--he is really starting to make a name for himself."
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 3-4 on the season.
Northwestern returns to action at noon Sunday, Feb. 5 as it hosts Harvard at the Combe Tennis Center.
