NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Northwestern's men's tennis team officially opened the 2005-06 campaign by competing in the first day of the Tom Fallon Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. The Wildcats went 4-6 in singles play, and lost their only doubles match of the day.

The 'Cats opened tournament play by taking on Ball State in singles play. Marc Dwyer (Peachtree, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) dropped his first match to Joe Epkey 6-3, 6-3.

Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) dropped his first set to Jarrod Epkey, then rallied back to split the first two sets. In the tie-breaker, Epkey outlasted Christian, and came away with the win 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).

Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) fell to Patrick Thompson 6-4, 6-3.

Alexey Evstratenkov dropped his first collegiate match to Jan Polhamus 6-1, 6-4.

The first round of singles play ended for the Wildcats when freshman Andrew Hoffman (Fremont, Neb./Fremont) fell to Joe Vallee 6-1, 6-0.

Thankfully, Northwestern's day was not over after the first session, and the Wildcats came out set establish themselves against Army in the second round of singles play.

Dwyer started things out on the right foot as he outlasted John Houghton in three sets 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8). With the win, Dwyer notched his first collegiate singles win.

Schaechterle followed Dwyer's lead by defeating Carl Fisher 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Christian then made short work of Phil Muhawi, winning 6-3, 6-3.

Hoffman also recorded his first win for the Wildcats. After beating Stephen Coulis 6-2 in the first set, Coulis edged Hoffman 5-7 to claim the second. Hoffman came out in the tie-breaker and overpowered Coulis to take the third set, 1-0 (10-4).

Finally Schaechterle and Evstratenkov fell to Drake's Jonathan Tishler and Maor Zirkin, 8-5.

Northwestern is back in action at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, taking on Michigan in singles play. At 1 p.m., Northwestern battles Wisconsin in doubles action, and the 'Cats face Army in doubles play at 2 p.m.
