EVANSTON, Ill. -- Following a shaky start to the first game of the 2005 season, Northwestern roared back to down UW-Green Bay, 3-0, Saturday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats (1-0) found themselves down early in the first game, but flew back to tie it at 22-22 on a Lindsay Anderson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) kill.
The game moved back-and-forth until the Phoenix earned a game-point, 29-28, but Brittney Aldridge (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) stuffed home a kill on an assist from Lauren Greenwood (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) to again tie the score, 29-29.
A UWGB hitting error gave the Wildcats a 30-29 lead before senior Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) ended it with an ace to put NU up in the match, 1-0.
Northwestern would not trail again in the match, save for an early 1-2 deficit in the second game. A four-point run in the middle of that game gave the Wildcats an 11-5 lead they eventually built into a 30-20 second-game victory.
NU came out firing in the third game, with an Aldridge solo block capping a 5-0 run to start the game. The Phoenix fought back to pull within four, 21-17, but Northwestern reeled off the next seven points to take a 27-18 lead en route to a 30-23 final score.
The win gives the Wildcats a 4-1 record in season-opening contests in the past five years.
Offensively, Anderson and sophomore Courtnie Paulus (Belguim, Wis./Ozaukee) led Northwestern with 12 kills. Anderson's .357 hitting percentage paced the 'Cats.
Aldridge racked up four blocks defensively for NU. Greenwood finished with 41 assists.
Northwestern returns to action at 9 p.m. CT, Thursday, Sept. 1 against Winthrop at the Four Points Sheridan Arizona Classic.
