Grevers Closes World University Games With Fourth Medal

IZMIR, Turkey -- In the final swimming event of the 2005 World University Games Wednesday in Izmir, Turkey, junior Matt Grevers swam the backstroke leg of the 400 medley relay to help propel the U.S. squad to a second-place finish and a fourth medal of the Games for Grevers.

The Lake Forest, Ill., native did not swim the preliminary heat with the relay, which qualified fourth for the finals with a time of 3:42.92. He led off for the U.S. in the championship heat and helped lower that time to a 3:39.35.

Grevers totalled two silver and two bronze medals at the WUG. He also finished second in the 100 back while coming in third in the 4x100 free relay and the 50 back.

The United States finished atop the swimming medal standings with 25. Japan was second with 20.

Of the 25 American medals, Northwestern swimmers earned six. Sophomore Andrea Hupman captured a pair of gold medals with the 4x100 and 4x200 freestyle relays.

Junior Mike Alexandrov (Bulgaria) also competed at the Games. His best finish was a fourth-place effort in the 200 breast Thursday.
