EVANSTON, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference has announced the league schedule for the 2006 men's basketball season.
Northwestern's first conference game will take place Wednesday, Jan. 4, when Purdue comes to town. Tipoff for that game will be 6 p.m., an early start for a midweek game -- the time was moved up to accommodate fans who also want to see the Rose Bowl, which will be played that night to determine the national college football champion.
Following that game, the Wildcats are on the road for five of their next seven games, with the lone home contests coming against Penn State (Wednesday, Jan. 11) and Illinois (Saturday, Jan. 21). NU is home for five of its last eight games, three of its last four, and its last two.
NU is slated to make one national TV appearance during the conference season, when the `Cats host Wisconsin on Thursday, Feb. 23 (8 p.m. CST on ESPN2). Every other game except for Purdue (Jan. 4) and Penn State (Jan. 11) are scheduled for ESPN+ Local or ESPN+ Regional -- TV announcements on the Purdue and Penn State games are still to be made.
Northwestern will meet the following conference teams once this season -- Michigan (Jan. 18 in Ann Arbor), Indiana (Feb. 1 in Bloomington), Michigan State (Feb. 4 in Evanston) and Iowa (Feb. 8 in Evanston). Both of the Wildcats' byes will occur on weekends this year, Jan. 28-29 and Feb. 11-12.
The Big Ten Tournament returns to Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis this year, and takes place March 9-12.
Northwestern, under sixth-year head coach Bill Carmody, is looking to improve upon its 6-10 record from a year ago. The Wildcats finished eighth in the regular-season standings, then defeated Michigan in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament before being knocked out of the event by top-seeded Illinois.
