IZMIR, Turkey -- Junior Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) added a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke to his hardware collection during Monday night's finals at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey.
Grevers qualified first during the morning's preliminary heats with a 55.20. In the finals he lowered that time to a 50.08, but Japan's Masafumi Yamaguchi turned in a 50.00 flat time to capture the gold medal.
Grevers led after the first 50 with a 26.57, .25 seconds ahead of Yamaguchi. The Japan swimmer powered back to barely out-touch Grevers.
In Sunday's 50-meter backstroke race, Grevers and Yamaguchi tied for the bronze medal. Grevers previously won a bronze with the U.S. 4x100 free relay Saturday night.
Coupled with sophomore Andrea Hupman's (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) two golds in the women's 4x100 and 4x200 freestyle relays, Northwestern swimmers now have five medals from these World University Games -- two gold, one silver and two bronze.
With Izmir eight hours ahead of Chicago, Monday's finals are now complete.
Junior Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), swimming for Bulgaria, will swim during Tuesday's action in the 400 IM.
