KENOSHA, Wis. - People say it's good luck when it rains on their wedding day. Well, under a steady light rain the Northwestern football team began its 14-year relationship with Wisconsin-Parkside this morning. It was the second straight year rain soaked the Wildcats' first practice north of the Illinois border.

"I don't think I've seen rain in about two years," said Walker, jokingly. "It was a nice cool day; it doesn't get any better than this (temperature around 70 degrees) for practice."

In their first of 15 scheduled practices on the UW-Parkside campus, NU worked three hours in just shells (helmet and shoulder pads).

"It's nice to be here at UW-Parkside," said Walker. "The move itself is always a bit of a logistical hassle, because we virtually bring everything from Evanston here. But it was good to get here early yesterday and get everything situated."

The Wildcats practiced Wednesday morning in Evanston, before departing for Kenosha at 4 p.m.

"I thought today was a much better practice than yesterday," said Walker. "We've made some gains in conditioning and I'm pleased with that. Our enthusiasm was by in large positive, which is always good. All-in-all it was a pretty good day."

Northwestern will remain in Kenosha until Aug. 23 to prepare for its season opener Sept. 3 vs. Ohio.

Practice Notes
(During team drills)

• Redshirt freshman Ross Lane hauled in a 25-yard catch from Brett Basanez against the No. 1 defense.

• With limited contact (hitting without tackling), sophomore Brandon Roberson, freshmen Omar Conteh and Tyrell Sutton all took snaps with the No. 1 offense at tailback.

• Junior Shaun Herbert caught a 30-yard pass from Basanez vs. the No. 2 defense.

• Without being able to tackle the ball carrier, both the No. 1 and No. 2 defensive lines did a commendable job of stuffing the run.

• Freshman Brendan Smith hauled in an interception after a thrown pass was tipped into the air.

• Junior Bryan Heinz returned an interception 60 yards (approximately) for a touchdown.
