EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has announced its 2005 schedule, opening Aug. 27 against UW-Green Bay at Welsh-Ryan Arena before taking part in three tournaments, including NU's own Wildcat Classic Sept. 16-17.
Northwestern's season-opener against the Phoenix is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
"Our opening match against Wisconsin-Green Bay is a good one," NU head coach Keylor Chan said. "They won their conference two years ago and have done very well recently. It will be a good challenge for us."
Following that match, the Wildcats travel to Arizona for a tournament Sept. 1-3 with games against Winthrop, Georgia Tech and the host Wildcats.
"Winthrop is a strong program that won its conference," Chan said. "Georgia Tech won the ACC and Arizona is perennially a top-25 team, so the tournament will be a good test to see where our young team is."
Northwestern then returns to the Chicagoland area for the Chicago Challenge Sept. 9-10 hosted by DePaul. NU will face Loyola (Ill.), the Blue Demons and UIC.
"It is always good to continue to build a Chicagoland volleyball tradition," Chan said. "We look forward to playing schools from within the city limits."
Northwestern's Wildcat Classic takes place at Welsh-Ryan Arena Sept. 16-17 with Southern Illinois, Brown and Kentucky coming to town.
"We have an SEC team with a new coach and a Southern Illinois team with an entirely new coaching staff coming in," Chan said. "Playing Brown -- a school with a similarly academic-oriented program -- is great. This will be a good conclusion to a very competitive nonconference schedule."
The Wildcats open the Big Ten season Sept. 23 at home against Iowa.
"The Big Ten is again one of the best conferences in the nation," Chan said. "We want to build on last year and our ultimate goal is to get back to the NCAA Tournament."
