CHICAGO, Ill. -- Senior Erin Mobley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) broke Northwestern's career hits record with a 2-for-3 effort, but it was DePaul scoring the runs in a 4-0 decision over the Wildcats in the first game of NCAA Super Regional Two Friday afternoon at Flames Field.
With the loss, Northwestern falls to 42-17, while DePaul improves to 44-19. The Wildcats now must defeat the Blue Demons twice Saturday to advance to the Women's College World Series. The first game is scheduled for 5 p.m., with the second game to begin immediately after should NU force it.
In five of its first six NCAA Tournament games this season, Northwestern's opponent has scored first. DePaul put one run on the board in the first after two bloop singles and an error. Wildcat starter Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) fought out of the jam, getting a strikeout and a groundout to strand three Blue Demon runners and limit DePaul's lead to one, 1-0.
The Blue Demons struck again in the top of the third when Jenny Doezie hit a two-run homer to left for a 3-0 lead.
Northwestern began to get to DePaul starter Megan Huitink in the third. Sophomore Katie Logan (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) got a two-out single, and freshman Stephanie Churchwell (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) followed with a single of her own. Mobley drilled NU's third-consecutive hit into center, but a perfect throw nailed Logan at the plate to end the inning before the Wildcats could score.
DePaul continued to apply the pressure in the fifth. A walk, followed by a bunt single and a sacrifice bunt put runner on second and third with one out. Kate Sheaks hit a sacrifice fly to left to score one run, and Northwestern caught the second runner napping off the base to end the inning, but not before the Blue Demons went up 4-0.
Mobley hit a hard come-backer off the pitcher in the bottom of the sixth inning, reaching for a single and the 216th hit of her career -- passing Kelley Green (1993-96) for Northwestern's all-time record.
Sophomore Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) then reached on an error by Saskia Roberson at first, but NU could not muster a run in the frame.
In the seventh, junior Sheila McCorkle (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) led off with an infield single to short, hustling down the line to beat the throw after forcing a dive from Jessica Evans. With two outs, Logan hit her second single of the game into left field, moving McCorkle to third on the play. NU's rally would end there, however.
Canney was tagged with the loss, falling to 19-9 on the year. Huitink improved to 21-10 with the win.
