ATLANTA, Ga. - A doubles point that came down to the wire and three tightly played singles matches proved to be the story in Northwestern's 4-0, closer-than-the-scoreboard-indicated loss to 27th-ranked Clemson Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

After the teams split the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches, the Tigers' Clement Reix and Sander Koning squeaked by Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) and Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrugge), 9-7, at No. 2 to claim the important team point.

Clemson then won at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles to advance to tomorrow's NCAA Regional Championship, where they will face either sixth-seeded Georgia or Winthrop.

Northwestern finished its season 12-13 overall and 6-4 in the Big Ten. Clemson improves to 25-10 on the year.

At the top singles spot, senior Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) turned in a whale of a performance against 27th-ranked Nathan Thompson. The senior took the first set from Thompson 6-4, before the Tiger battled back to win the second 6-3. When the match was clinched at No. 4 singles, Hanus was leading Thompson, 2-1, in the third set.

Earlier in the day, Hanus turned in a gutsy performance against another ranked opponent -- this time partnering with fellow senior Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) to take on 50th-ranked Thompson and Ryan Young at No. 1 doubles. The Tigers beat Hanus and Perrin, 8-4.

Senior Justin Hoeveler (Ross, Calif./The Branson School) and sophomore Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) picked up the slack by steam-rolling Twente and Keeler at No. 3, 8-1.

But Clemson's Reix and Koning delivered the crucial team point by edging Schaechterle and Tempke, 9-7.
