WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. --No. 16 Northwestern used a seven-run fifth inning and a one-hit shutout outing from sophomore Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) to run-rule Purdue, 9-0, in five innings at the Varsity Softball Complex Sunday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 29-9 overall, 11-0 in the Big Ten. Purdue falls to 28-16 on the season, 5-4 in the Conference.
Entering the game one RBI shy of tying the single-season school record, junior Jamie Dotson (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) drove in her 44th run of the season in the first inning.
Senior Erin Mobley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) got on base after an error by the shortstop, then advanced to second on a productive groundout by sophomore Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic). Dotson hit a grounder up the middle for a base hit, and Mobley motored around third to put the Wildcats on top, 1-0.
The `Cats kept coming in the second. Freshman Kelly Odell (Portland, Ore./Westlake) hit a one-out single, then was erased after a fielder's choice ball hit by freshman Darcy Sengewald (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East). With Sengewald on first, sophomore Katie Logan (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) laced a double off the glove of Purdue's third baseman. Sengewald came all the way around from first to score and give NU a 2-0 lead.
The double was the second of the weekend for Logan, who also hit one Friday at Indiana. Logan entered the weekend with just one career double.
After a Mobley leadoff single in the third, Melissa Burns came in to relieve Purdue starter Brooke Baker. Cooper next lined a double over the centerfielder's head, but Mobley was thrown out at the plate on the play.
The double was Cooper's 11th of the season, one short of Dotson's team-leading 12 and two shy of the school's single-season record.
Logan continued her hot hitting of late, ripping a single into left field to lead off the fifth inning. Freshman Stephanie Churchwell (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) followed with a single of her own to put runners on first and second with no outs.
Logan has had three multi-hit games in NU's last five contests.
Mobley followed with a long single to center field that would have been an easy double, but the runners ahead of her had to hold to see if it would be caught. With the bases loaded, Baker came back to the circle for Purdue.
Cooper greeted her with a hard single to left, scoring Logan and making the score 3-0. Dotson followed with a single to the shortstop, scoring Churchwell and leaving the sacks loaded with no outs.
Dotson's RBI gave her 45 for the season, giving her the Northwestern single-season record all by herself.
Junior Kristen Amegin (Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) then hit a ground ball to the second baseman, who came home with the throw, but was too late to get Mobley. That run made the score 5-0 in favor of the Wildcats.
Junior Sheila McCorkle (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) stepped the plate and broke the game wide open, clearing the bases with a triple to right center. Cooper, junior Ashley Crane (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake) -- pinch running for Dotson -- and Amegin all scored on the play to give NU an 8-0 advantage with still no outs in the inning.
After Odell drew a walk, Sengewald hit into a double play to allow Purdue to record the first two outs of the inning, but McCorkle scored on the play to push the lead to 9-0.
Canney (16-4) allowed one hit and one walk and finished with two strikeouts for the five-inning victory. The shutout was her third of the season and the 11th of her career.
Baker (13-11) took the loss for Purdue.
Mobley, Cooper, Dotson and Logan all finished with two hits for NU. McCorkle's three RBIs were a career-best for the junior.
Mobley's two runs gave her 116 for her career, setting the Northwestern all-time record. She jumps former teammate Erin Jancic (1999-2002) for the honor. On Friday against Indiana, Mobley broke another of Jancic's career records, that one being total bases.
