BRYAN, Texas -- Northwestern was on the cusp of a top-10 finish at the high-powered Texas A&M Aggie Invitational Sunday afternoon, but a final surge by Michigan State pushed the Wildcats back to 11th place while the Spartans finished ninth. Texas A&M finished in 10th place, between the 'Cats and Spartans. NU did finish ahead of Ohio State and Notre Dame, as well as Texas A&M's "B" squad.
It was a good tournament for Northwestern's Dublin duo -- freshman Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) and sophomore Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman). Moore placed a career-best 12th while Wilson landed in 18th place. Ironically, the two players turned in strong outings while playing on a course designed by Columbus native Jack Nicklaus.
Moore shot a 4-over 220 (75-69-76) for his 12th place effort -- easily the top performance of his young career. Wilson finished at 6-over (73-76-73) and continues to be the Wildcats' most consistent golfer this spring.
Junior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) placed 45th with a 14-over 230 (78-75-77) while freshman Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) wound up 70th at 27-over (79-82-82=243). Junior Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena) rounded out the Wildcat finishers with a 72nd-place showing (81-72-94=247).
Oklahoma State, the nation's top-ranked team and one of 10 teams in this tournament ranked in the top-50, edged No. 5 New Mexico for the team title.
Northwestern returns to action next weekend at Ohio State's Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus.
