EVANSTON, Ill. -- Freshman Stephanie Churchwell (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) has been named Big Ten Player of the Week following an amazing 12-for-15 (.800) performance at the plate during Northwestern's sweeps of Minnesota and Wisconsin over the weekend.
Churchwell began the week with a 3-for-4 day Friday, scoring a run and driving in a run in addition to stealing a base in NU's 7-4 victory over the Gophers. On Saturday, Churchwell went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a two-run home run that gave the Wildcats some much-needed insurance in a 5-2 win against UM.
In Sunday's sweep of Wisconsin, Churchwell finished 7-for-8 at the plate with two doubles, four runs scored and three RBIs. She raised her batting average .32 points to .415 on the year with her stellar week.
The honor is the second of Churchwell's career. She also received Big Ten POW accolades following the season's opening weekend. Wildcats have received Conference honors five times this season.
The 18th-ranked Wildcats are off to their best Conference start in school history at 8-0. NU currently sits one game ahead of top-ranked Michigan.
