FULLERTON, Calif. -- The morning after Northwestern took down the No. 3 team in the nation, it was Bowling Green doing the upsetting. The Falcons scored two runs on a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to stun the Wildcats Sunday at the Worth Invitational, 5-4.
Northwestern finished the Worth Invitational with a 2-2 record and currently stands at 13-6 on the season.
The Wildcats scored first in the game in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) drew a two-out walk before junior Kristen Amegin (Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) launched her seventh home run of the season to give NU a 2-0 lead.
It was Amegin's second home run of the weekend and the 18th of her career, moving her into a tie with Karen Lemke for second-place all-time at Northwestern. The career home run record is 20.
Senior Erin Mobley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) added a solo shot for the Wildcats in the third inning to give Northwestern a 3-0 advantage.
In the fourth, junior Jamie Dotson (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) led off with a single, then scored two batters later when freshman Darcy Sengewald (Franklin, Ill./Lincoln Way East) hit her second triple of the season.
With a 4-0 lead, Northwestern made a pair of defensive errors in the fifth inning that helped Bowling Green put up a three-spot and pull back to within one run, 4-3.
The Wildcats gave themselves a chance to add some insurance in the top of the seventh when sophomore Katie Logan (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol), freshman Stephanie Churchwell (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) and Mobley led off with back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs.
The next two 'Cats struck out and Dotson popped up to end the threat.
In the bottom of the seventh, BGSU led off with a single against NU reliever Megan Hinck (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich). Hinck then retired the next two batters before back-to-back singles gave BGSU the 5-4 victory.
With the loss, Hinck's record on the season falls to 0-1. Junior Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) started for Northwestern and pitched five innings. She allowed three runs -- one earned -- and four hits while striking out four.
Mobley finished the game 3-for-4 while Logan had two hits for the Wildcats.
Northwestern now has two weeks off for winter quarter final exams before returing to action March 18-20 at the Hornets Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif.
