Delguyd Advances to Quarterfinals of NCAA Championships

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships Thursday night by earning a 3-1 decision over ninth-seeded Marcio Botelho of Fresno State in session two. Delguyd was the only Wildcat to record a victory in the second session, as the rest of NU's squad will now continue to battle in the consolation bracket.
As a team, Northwestern currently sits in a tie with Central Michigan for 16th place with 14.0 points a piece. Oklahoma State remains atop the leader board, and has gained a sizeable lead on the rest of the pack. The Cowboys have amassed 39.0 points, while Minnesota is next in line with 28.5.
After a scoreless first round in Delguyd's match, Botelho notched the first point with a quick escape to start round two. Delguyd returned the favor with an escape to start third round, tying it 1-1. Then, in typical, last-minute-heroics fashion, Delguyd took a 3-1 lead off a takedown with under one minute to go. He rode Botelho the rest of the way for the 3-1 decision.
Delguyd will now face top-ranked Jon Trenge of Lehigh, who, so far, has lived up to the top-billing by pinning both of his opponents.
Junior John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) dropped a narrow decision to sixth-seeded Efren Ceballos of Cal-State Bakersfield, 6-5. Velez scored first with a takedown at 1:30 in the opening round. At the start of round two, Ceballos recorded an escape and then an additional two points with a takedown. Velez countered with an escape to get back 4-3 and another in the third round to tie it 4-4. But Ceballos later scored the go-ahead takedown, getting to 6-4. Velez added an escape, but fell just short, 6-5.
In his second-round match, freshman Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edwards) had the tall task of facing the nation's top-ranked 141-pounder in Iowa State's Nate Gallick. Gallick proved too much for Lang, winning 13-5.
Freshman Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) suffered one of the biggest upsets of session two, falling to unseeded Imad Kharbush of Stanford, 16-7.
At heavyweight, freshman Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) put in a valiant effort against the fifth-seeded Greg Wagner of Michigan. Just a week and a half ago, Wagner soundly beat Fox, 14-1. But Fox was more aggressive than Wagner for much of their match Thursday night, nearly landing a few takedowns, but doing so just out of bounds. The two behemoths were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and Wagner earned a 3-1 sudden victory in overtime.
