ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Four Northwestern wrestlers totaled eight victories in the consolation brackets Friday morning at the NCAA Championships, raising the Wildcats' point total to 23.5 for 17th place.

Freshman Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) rebounded from his loss yesterday by posting two victories by fall. Fellow-freshman Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edwards) recorded his second pin of the tournament to open the day and scored a decision victory, as well. Freshman Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) and junior John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) also recorded a pair of wins in session three.

In his opening round against Michigan's Nick Roy, Herbert jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first round after a handful of takedowns. He pinned Roy at 4:56. Later against Bloomsburg's Bryce Hasseman, Herbert recorded his team-leading eighth pin of the year by nailing Hasseman to the mat at 1:08.

Not to be outdone, Lang put Navy's Nate Gulosh on his back for the pin 51 seconds into his first match of the day -- his eighth pin of the year.

Pittsburgh's Ron Tarquinio -- the No. 8 seed -- did not fair much better against Lang. At the end of round one, Lang had a close, 2-1 lead. An escape in round two stretched his lead to 3-1. Then, in the final frame, Lang earned five points for a nearfall at the 2-minute mark, securing the 9-2 victory after riding time was added.

Velez grinded out a pair of decisions. He first faced Shawn Cordell of West Virginia. Velez took a 3-0 lead into the third round. An late escape by Cordell with 30 seconds to go pulled him to within one of Velez at 3-2. But Velez held him off, even recording a takedown as time ran out for the 6-2 decision after a bonus point for riding time.

Velez went right to work in his first match against North Carolina's Drew Forshey, recording a takedown at 2:35, before scoring another about 30 seconds later. Forshey never really threatened, as Velez added an insurance takedown with less than a minute to go, and held on to win 8-2.

After narrowly falling in overtime last night, 3-1, Fox found himself on the right side of a 3-1, overtime decision against Wyoming's Dusty Hoffschneider. Each wreslter recorded escapes at the start of round two and three, sending it into overtime knotted at 1-1. Fox scored a takedown shortly thereafter for the 3-1 decision.

At 197 lbs., junior Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) took on top-ranked Jon Trenge of Lehigh in the quarterfinals, but fell short, 9-2.
