EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern returns to action this weekend at the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State following a week off for winter quarter final exams. The Wildcats enter the weekend ranked No. 23/25 in the nation after handing No. 3 Stanford its second loss of the season at the Worth Invitational on March 5.

NU faces a tough slate this weekend, taking on the second- and 17th-ranked schools in the country. Following the Capital Classic, the Wildcats travel to No. 24/21 Fresno State for a mid-week doubleheader beginning at 8 p.m. CT March 22.

Northwestern has split its last two games against the Bears, falling to then-No. 3 Cal, 4-2, last season after defeating the then-defending national champs, 4-3, in 2003. Ironically, when NU beat Cal in 2003, it defeated then-No. 17 Oregon State in the same tournament. That game was the 'Cats' last meeting with OSU, which enters this weekend with that same No. 17 ranking.

The Wildcats have already faced Kansas once this season, defeating the Jayhawks, 7-1, Feb. 5 at the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic. Junior Kristen Amegin (Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) homered in that game while senior Erin Mobley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) was a perfect 3- for-3 at the plate.

Sophomore Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) tossed a couple of superb outings two weekends ago to run her record to 8-2 on the season. She currently ranks second in the Big Ten with a 0.88 ERA. Sophomore Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) hit .545 last weekend and currently ranks third in the Big Ten with a .423 average.
