Wildcats Bounce Back Big Against Cowgirls, 9-1

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Northwestern's final inning at the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic was also its biggest. The Wildcats exploded for eight runs in the top of the fifth against Oklahoma State, defeating the Cowgirls, 9-1, in five innings.
Freshman Stephanie Churchwell (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) continued the sizzling start to her collegiate career, going 2-for-4 with her first home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Churchwell went 9-of-16 -- a .553 average -- during the tournament.
Junior Sheila McCorkle (Costa Mesa, Calif./El Toro) also homered for NU, blasting a solo shot for her first round-tripper of the year.
Junior Jamie Dotson (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) doubled, scored and drove in a pair of runs to give her 11 RBIs on the young season.
Junior Kristen Amegin (West Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) also went 1-for-2 with two RBIs while sophomore Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Also scoring runs for NU were senior Erin Mobley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill), sophomores Elizabeth Piatt (Monticello, Ill./Monticello) and Jessica Miller (Elberfeld, Ind./Techumseh) and freshman Darcy Sengewald (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East).
Sophomore Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) improved her record to 2-1 on the season, allowing one run on three hits and a pair of walks while striking out six.
Oklahoma State scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first and kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard until the fourth, when NU tied the game.
Northwestern returns to action next weekend with five games at the FAU Worth Invitational.
