TUCSON, Ariz. -- Four Wildcats collected two or more RBIs while five rapped out a pair of hits in a five-inning, 13-1 rout over Tulsa in the nightcap of the first day of the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic.
The 13 runs were the most for a Northwestern squad since a 13-4 win over Illinois-Chicago on May 2, 2002. The 12-run win was NU's largest margin of victory since a 12-0 shutout of Michigan on April 23, 2000, in which Lauren Schwendimann tossed a 5-inning perfect game.
Northwestern scored three runs in the first, seven in the second and three more in the third before being blanked in the fourth. Tulsa pushed its lone run across in the top of the fourth inning.
Junior catcher Jamie Dotson (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) led the Wildcats against Tulsa with her second home run in as many games, adding a double and three RBIs to give her seven on the day.
Junior Kristen Amegin (West Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) also swatted her first home run of the season, finishing with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Junior Sheila McCorkle (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) added a double and a single and two RBIs for NU while senior Erin Mobley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) hit a pair of singles and scored three times.
Sophomore Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) finished 1-for-1 with a double and a sacrifice fly, three RBIs and two runs scored. Cooper, last year's Big Ten batting champ, is now a perfect 3-for-3 to start the season.
Sophomore Megan Hinck (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) rapped out two singles with an RBI and a run scored while freshman Stephanie Churchwell (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) singled, doubled and scored twice for NU.
Freshman Kristen Salamon (Kent, Ohio/Kent Roosevelt) pinch ran for Dotson and also scored a Wildcat run.
Sophomore Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) started the game in the circle and tossed three innings, allowing a pair of hits while striking out five. Hinck then threw the final two innings for NU.
This is the second consecutive season Northwestern has begun the year with a 2-0 record. Before then, the last time NU opened with a pair of wins was 1993.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday with two more games at the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic. NU begins the day at Noon CT against Kansas before taking on host and second-ranked Arizona beginning at 5 p.m. CT.
