CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- Junior Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) pitched a 13-strikeout, three-hit gem in Friday's opening game of the Palm Springs Classic, leading Northwestern to a 2-0 win over No. 23/25 Long Beach State.
Foster (4-1) allowed just two bunt singles and a double in the game while walking two. The shutout is her second of the season and the performance was her third double-digit K effort of the season.
"Courtnay pitched a phenomenal game," NU Head Coach Kate Drohan said. "She got some important strikeouts with runners on base."
Northwestern jumped on the board in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Katie Logan (Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol) led off with a single up the middle, and advanced to third when the LBSU third-baseman overthrew second base after a ground ball from freshman Stephanie Churchwell (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro). Logan scooted home after a wild pitch from Marcel Torres to give NU the 1-0 lead.
Junior Kristen Amegin (W. Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) added some insurance in the top of the sixth, leading off the inning with a home run to center field. The blast was her Big Ten-leading fourth of the season and the 15th of her career, tying her for fourth-place all-time at Northwestern.
Junior Jamie Dotson (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) and Churchwell also hit singles for NU.
Sophomore Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) did not record a hit for the first time this season, snapping a 10-game hitting streak. She drew a walk in the contest, and has reached base safely in every game this year.
The win is Northwestern's first this season over a ranked opponent in three tries. Earlier this year, the Wildcats took No. 2 Arizona to extra innings before falling, 4-3. NU also fell to then No. 20 Georgia Tech.
NU improves to 8-3 on the season with the win, while Long Beach State falls to 7-4.
Northwestern returns to action at 5:30 p.m. CT Friday against No. 12 Washington. Gametracker will be available for the game on NUsports.com
