EVANSTON, Ill. -- After downpours knocked out much of collegiate softball's slate last weekend, Northwestern flies to Palm Springs, Calif., hoping to rain on a few parades at the Palm Springs Classic. The Wildcats were off last weekend, but four of NU's five opponents had games washed out because of inclement weather.
Northwestern enters the weekend receiving votes in both polls and will face a tough lineup in Southern California -- four of NU's five games are against teams ranked or receiving votes.
After Northwestern's batters scored 37 runs at the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic, it was the Wildcat pitchers who shone in NU's last outing at the FAU Worth Invitational. Junior Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) tossed an 18-strikeout, one hit-shutout against Boston College and sophomore Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) threw a shutout of her own while picking up a pair of wins. She currently leads the Big Ten with 46 strikeouts.
Offensively, NU boasts the most home runs and walks in the conference while ranking second in RBIs and slugging percentage.
Individually, junior Kristen Amegin (West Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) leads the Big Ten with three home runs. Freshman Stephanie Churchwell (Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro) is in the top-five of seven different offensive categories, including second-place ranks in hits (14), home runs (2) and total bases (22). Junior Jamie Dotson (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) is currently second in the Big Ten with 11 RBIs.
